About the Event

Join Canadian Women in Medicine on Wednesday, June 21st as we hear from Dr. Melissa Melnitzer.

Dr. Melissa Melnitzer is a family physician and MAiD provider practising home visiting

palliative care with the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Sinai Health System. Prior

to this, she practised psychotherapy and worked for 15 years as part of an interdisciplinary

team serving people experiencing homelessness. She facilitates Balint groups for her peers

as well as therapeutic writing groups more broadly. She also provides burnout prevention

workshops for health care providers and others in caregiving roles.

Over the 7 years since Medical Assistance in Dying was legalized in Canada, tens of thousands

of Canadians have been exploring and carrying through this option at the end of life. We are

reaching a point where most people in Canada have been touched by MAiD, from very closely

to from afar. This is only expected to increase as awareness and availability of MAiD in Canada

continue to rise, and as our population ages. This talk will delve into what physicians need to

know about MAiD today from the eligibility assessment process to provision. By the end of the

session you will be better able to address this complex and sensitive issue in your own practice.
