Transitions in practice and retirement planning are complex, particularly for physicians whose personal identity is often tied to their profession. The unique experiences that women often face can exacerbate these challenges. The education and training required to become a physician often leaves little time to think about, or develop, outside interests. This talk will look briefly at how retirement trends have shifted with increased longevity and shifting workforce participation rates among women, while focusing on how investing time and resources into facilitating mid and later career succession planning strategies can honour a physicians’ lifelong commitment to medicine.
