Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

by Chelsea Mac

Every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. Indigenous women are killed at 6X the rate of non-Indigenous women. One half of all Canadian women over the age of 16 has experienced at least one incident of sexual or physical violence. In 2014, over 80% of police-reported IPV homicide victims were women. Every single night, close to 3500 Canadian women and 3000 children sleep in shelters. Children who witness violence in the home have double the rate of psychiatric disorders as other children. Cyber violence (harassment, stalking, online threats) is a new extension of violence against women, with young women (18-24) being most affected.

What you can do: Call 911 if somebody is in immediate danger. Listen to her. Respect her. Ask her if you can help. Do not judge her. Learn about emergency services in your community.
